Kanaatal

A small hamlet situated on the Chamba-Mussoorie road, it is perched at an elevation of 2590m. In Hindi, ‘Kanaa’ refers to a dried-up condition. Once there was a lake in the village that dried up. As a result, the villagers now refer to this empty lake crater as ‘Kanaatal’ or a ‘Dried up Lake’. This small village is also known for its majestic Surkanda Temple, which is also one of the major ‘Shaktipeethas’ where the head of ‘Sati’ (An incarnation of Shakti or feminine power) fell. The climate of Kanaatal in summer is quite pleasant with temperatures ranging between 10-20C. In winter, this may drop below between -5 to -10C, causing frigid snowfall. During the latter, roads are often blocked by tremendous snowfall and are therefore not favorable for travel.

Radi Top

This place is located in Barkot of Uttarkashi district and houses a high diversity of Himalayan flora and fauna. The road to Radi top separates the Ranwai valley from Bhandaryun. At the topmost peak of Radi top, the Nag Devta (Serpent-lord) temple is situated where Lord Boukhnag performed severe penance. Raithal

Physical Features of Mountains You Should Know as a Trekker

Mountains are marvels of nature. Each one is different from the others. With diverse terrains and biodiversity, these geographical monuments harbor the ecosystem in pristine condition. However, for mountaineers limiting the knowledge only up to the beauty is not enough. There are many technical terms that should be known by a mountaineer to assess every mountain. We, at Kashti Adventures, emphasize more on knowledge as it gives a trekker the understanding to carry out an otherwise-tricky trek. So here is a list of such words that will help you to get a bird’s eye view of the literary and technical aspects of mountaineering.

Range

A range is nothing but a chain of mountains that are connected to each other through high-altitude grounds. These are also referred to as belts or systems. The mountains under a range have the same origin. It means that all of them were formed as a result of the same geographical event. Not only earth but ranges have been found on other planets like Mars as well. The most well-known mountain ranges in India include the mighty Himalayas, Karakoram Range, Zanskar Range, Western Ghats, Satpura range, etc.

Ridge

A ridge acts like a natural connection between mountains. These are elevated and pointed lands with steep slopes called ridgelines. The most commonly found ridges are the Dendritic ones which are found along streams or river basins. With more or less erosion-resistant slopes, these ridges provide a direction to the lower brooks. Other ridges include stratigraphic ridge (Long and straight), Crater ridge (Circular edge due to meteor impact), Dune ridge (where loose sand particles form elevated ridges called dunes), etc. Ridges can also be found on hills depending upon their geographical stratification, soil particles, and size of the natural structure.

Summit

Summit is the highest point of a mountain that has maximum elevation. It should not be confused with the mountain top, which is located nearby to the summit. Smaller elevations near the summit are called sub-summits and can be differentiated from each other. Basically, any geographical elevation with a prominence of above 30 m is a peak and above 300 m is a mountain summit. Any value lower than this range is a sub-peak or sub-summit. Mount Everest has the highest summit at an elevation of 8848.86m.

Valley

A valley is a natural cradle whose brims are made up of enormous walls of mountains. These are elongated areas and may house glacial lakes or rivers. They are formed due to erosion or movement of the layers of the earth. From icy cold glaciers to scorching deserts, valleys are found cosmopolitan. Due to habitable conditions, valleys are usually a site to behold with many biodiversity and abiotic resources. Human settlements and agriculture are often successful in and around valleys due to these preferable natural conditions. The Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand is a notable name to take while talking about valleys.

Meadow

Meadow is a vast and open expanse of land amidst mountains. The vegetation types mostly found here, consist of Grasses and small herbs. Trees and shrubs are usually not found in the meadows. Like valleys, meadows also harbor beautiful floral diversity and are used by shepherds for grazing cattle. In the local Pahari dialect, a meadow is referred to as a ‘Bugyal’. Dayara Bugyal is one such heavenly natural abode, that can make your next trip a tad bit better!

Plateau

A plateau in layman’s language can be explained as a ‘Table-top’ due to its uncanny resemblance. Therefore, a plateau is a flat-topped structure with elevated edges that sets it higher than the rest of the surroundings. It is just the opposite of a valley that formed due to a depression in the natural terrain. One or more sides of a plateau have steep hills and some may have wider tops as well. the Deccan plateau of Southern India is rich with its biodiversity resources and the ecosystem services it provides.

Col

As already mentioned, mountain ridges connect adjacent peaks. These ridges have uneven structures as well and the lowest point of it is called a col. In other words, col is a more-or-less ‘U’-shaped depression that is formed in a ridge and is highly visible from far distances. Col has different terminologies like Saddle, wid gaps, etc as per the region or part of the world, that is talked about.

Glacier

A glacier is a compactified mass of snow or ice that has accumulated over millions of years. It is formed when the rate of formation of ice exceeds the ablation or melting. It is characterized by the seracs and crevasses that form as a result of its free flow. Glaciers, as an effect of their ginormous weights, move under themselves and gradually drown over centuries. Climate change has contributed negatively to the melting of glaciers. It has significantly increased water levels. The need of the hour is to combat climate change and use greener and cleaner energy alternatives in society.

Spiritual Significance of the Hemkund Sahib

Shri Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara is pronounced Hemkunt Sahib and means snow (Hem) Kund (bowl) is located in Chamoli district of Uttarkhand. It is one of the holy Sikh places of worship located at an elevation of 4160 mtrs.

It is remains closed between October and April. This is because it lies at a high altitude and the winters are harsh here. Consequently, many service-minded devotees come ahead in the month of May to clear the path for the following pilgrims to have a safe trek. This service is called Kar Seva, meaning selfless service, an important thought of the religion of Sikhism.

History

The site of Hemkund Sahib is mentioned in Dasam Grandh. The tenth Guru has said in his autobiography that he had meditated here in his previous birth.

But the actual location was discovered much later by a retired person from Indian army named Sant Sohan Singh. The Gurudwara was very small at first, measuring just 10ft by 10ft. Many renovations and additions were made later to enlarge the area under General Harkirat Singh

This place holds more tales…according to a tale of Hindu mythology, Lord Ram’s brother, Lakshman is also said to have meditated here. There is a temple dedicated to him close by and it is called Lakshman temple. Some local pundits also believe that even King Pandu of Mahabharata meditated here.

Timings

The Gurdwara, dedicated to Guru Gobind Singh, is open early but closed by 3pm due to the vagaries of the weather. The general public is not allowed to stay beyond that time. So the devotees get up as early as 4 in the morning to reach the top in time for a heavenly darshan and return back soon.

The birth date of Guru Gobind Singh is celebrated with processions and devotion songs. People share sweets and sharbat with each other on this day.

This day is celebrated to honor the forty followers of Guru Gobind Singh who gave up their lives fighting the Mughal forces.

How to Reach

By Air:

The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun. It is 268 kms away from Hemkund Sahib.

By Train:

The nearest railway station is Rishikesh.

By Road

Gobind ghat is well connected to Rishikesh by buses and other road transport.

Since Hemkund Sahib lies at a high altitude, few complete a part of the journey by vehicles. The final stretch can be done only on foot or on mules. To seek the divine is the ultimate goal, and the devout do not mind the hardships that they encounter to reach that destination with fortitude.

The Pilgrim's Journey

The trail to the shrine scales from an altitude of 6500ft to 10000ft in few kilometers. Only those fit enough can attempt this pilgrimage with ease.

The devout start at Gobhindghat early in the morning to reach the Gurudwara in time to have a darshan and return before the weather causes problems.

Snacks are available all along the way. Cleaners keep cleaning the track to help out pilgrims

At the top it is extremely cold the area is filled with snow most of the time. To counter this, the Gurudwara even provides blankets to those praying inside the premises.

Food in Langar and a dip in the Hemkund Sahib lake make the trip memorable. If you travel a bit higher, you may get to see the famed Brahm Kamals that bloom once in 12 years.

Helicopter Service

Weather permitting you can avail a helicopter service from Gobindghat to Ghagaria. The Cost for this ride would be INR.3000/- per passenger. About 5 kgs of baggage is allowed.

The total distance of the trek is 19 kms. The trek begins at Gobhindghat partly by car and partly by trek to reach Ghagharia. After a break the next is a non-stop 6 kms trek to Hemkund Sahib.

Closing date of Hemkund sahib

The Gurdwara will be closed for public by October 2022 after which it is not possible to travel to this shrine because of onset of winter.

Toughest Peaks of Indian Himalayas

India is a country filled with diverse terrains including valleys, mountains, rivers, plateaus, grasslands, and many more. Amongst all of these, the name that shines the brightest is the mighty Himalayan ranges. This ancient natural barrier has been the first choice for all adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers. So, here are the top 3 toughest peaks of the Himalayas, that’ll give you all the rumblings of butterflies in your stomach.

Kanchenjunga

It is the third highest peak in the world. You will be astonished to know that Kanchenjunga is actually a massif that consists of several peaks. Divided into four summits namely, the Kanchenjunga West (8505 m), Kanchenjunga South (8494 m), and the Kangbachen (7903 m), this massif is a marvel of nature. The name Kanchenjunga literally means ‘Five treasures of the snow. The base camp of this trek is a part of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. The locals consider this land to be sacred and therefore they respect each and every organism that resides in it. The pristine ecosystem is thronged by vulnerable animals like the Red Panda, Snow Leopards, and a plethora of other organisms as well. The whole trek to the summits can take a minimum of ten weeks to complete as the trail is suitable for advanced trekkers. In fact, some professional climbers often claim the trail to be congruently dangerous to Mt. Everest. So, if you are planning to summit the peaks of Kanchenjunga, you should have athlete-level fitness as you can expect everyday walks that may extend up to ten hours in frigid terrain.

Nanda Devi

The Nanda Devi peaks have been closed by the Government for the conservation of the pristine and delicate ecosystem. Nevertheless, that doesn’t affect the journey to the base camp, which is full of its own thrills! The Nanda Devi National Park is a World Heritage Site that has been recognized by UNESCO. The trek to the base camp may take anywhere between 10-12 days depending on the season and starting point of the journey. Nanda Devi is also a massif, with two peaks namely, Nanda Devi East (7434 m) and Nanda Devi West (7816m).

The trek through the Nanda Devi National Park can be easily ranked as one of the most difficult treks in India. If you are planning to carry huge luggage in the hope that mules and horses will be carrying them for you, then you should stop! It is so because these animals provide their services only up to Martoli after which you’ll have to pay higher to appoint porters for the same job. The trails are enriched with vibgyorish biodiversity of the Himalayas and occasional human settlements. The trek starts from Munsiyari village of Uttarakhand and is followed by a steep and tough trek with the Pachu Glacier towards the east. Since ancient times, the same trails had been used as a trade route between India and Tibet. The base camp is itself located at an altitude of 7816 m. Once reached, if you are lucky enough to get a clear morning sky, you’ll be blessed with the majestic views of Nanda Kot and Mount Changuch. The whole trek from Munsiyari takes 4-5 days to reach this base camp. Meanwhile, on this long journey, you will also get a glimpse of the Johri tribes with their herbal medicines. This trek is truly a full package in itself.

Mount Kamet

This is the third highest mountain in India, which is located in the Zanskar Mountain ranges of Chamoli district (Uttarakhand). The summit is characteristically flat with a pyramid-like body. In Tibetan dialect, the mountain is called ‘Kangmed’ or the burning mountain. During the early dawns, when the first rays of the sun hit the browns of the mountain, it is easy to get hypnotized by the golden aura that emanates. Hence, the name has been aptly given. Kamet is surrounded by the Mukut Parbat and Mana Gabin. Three major glaciers originate from this mountain including the Raikana Kamet, West Kamet, and East Kamet. The Western one drains into the Saraswati river and the eastern one becomes one with the Dhauliganga river. On the trail, you’ll encounter your last communications with a human settlement at 3450 m in the Niti village. After this point, you’ll be on your own on these adventurous slopes. Other key points on the trail include the Vasundhara Tal, an eternally icy glacial lake. As the trek is too dangerous to be carried out solo, it is important to travel in a group of 4-10. The trek takes a maximum of 25 days from Dehradun to Dehradun. So, if you are an adrenaline junkie, pack your belongings accordingly as it’s a long and treacherous journey.

Uttarkashi is one of the most popular districts of Uttarakhand. It is famous for being the starting point for many beautiful treks. Nachiketa Tal

This tiny lake is located at an altitude of 8074 feet to the east of Uttarkashi. It is believed that the lake was built by Rishi Uddalak who named it after his son, Nachiketa. Dayara Bugyal

Located at an altitude of 3048 m, Dayara Bugyal can be reached from Uttarkashi via Raithal. In the local dialect, Bugyal refers to open meadows of high altitudes. Dodital

Sangamchatti

Ayana Devi Temple

The trek to Ayana Devi temple starts from Gangori, via the Naald village of Uttarkashi. The trek is 11.4 km long and is surrounded by lush green flora and diverse fauna. On reaching the temple one can get occasional glimpses of the Himalayan Shepherds who graze their cattle in the region and play flutes. A small walk through the Ganesh Ganga Valley is also worth enjoying due to the serene beauty of the area.

Gaumukh

The Gaumukh trek starts from Uttarkashi to Gangotri via Harsil. After reaching Gangotri the walking trail is almost 17 km long and is for adventurous souls. It takes two days to complete the trek. Nightstays are available in Bhojbasa in local Ashrams or tents. Gaumukh is of utmost spiritual significance as this is where the sacred Ganges originates from. It is believed that King Bhagirath performed penance to call Ganga on earth and this is the place where she descended.

Gyansu

Gyansu is located amidst the town of Uttarkashi itself. It is a small locality that is flourishing along the banks of the Ganges. While you can enjoy a small trek through nearby hills, many parts of the trek pass through the busy streets. The last bits of the trek are quiet and free of crowds and sounds. One can see the towering mountains that cradle the town with distant barrages built on Ganga. Numerous temples adorn the pebbly trail and with a suitable guide, one can get a glimpse of the hidden religious spots as well.

Nakuri

The trek starts from the village of Naald traversing which, one can visit the confluence of Asi Ganga and Mighty Bhagirathi. Rows of Pine forests adorn the trail along with lush greenery and majestic peaks. The trek ends with a visit to Kuthnaur which is at a distance of 15 km from the nearest sub-district of Barkot.

Budha Kedar

It is a long and challenging trek that can be completed within a duration of 19 hours. The trek is known for its solitude and pristine crowd-free environment. So, it is necessary to travel in a group in such a place to avoid navigation problems. The Budha (Old) Kedar Village is named after the temple of the same name that resides in the area. Moreover, the temple is situated at the confluence of Bal Ganga and Dharam Ganga. It is believed that the Pandavas asked Rishi Balkhily to suggest a way so that they may get rid of all sins. The sage told them to visit this confluence and they’ll get the answers. Once the brothers visited this place, they saw an old man performing penance. When they tried to approach him, the man vanished and a Shivling appeared on the site. The brothers believed that this Shivling could remove all sins and Budha Kedar was formed just like that. A trekker can get a panoramic view of the Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath, and Kedarnath ranges from the village. The spot is also known as one of the best in terms of birding and camping

History of Valley of Flowers - A case of Serendipitious Discovery

Summer is at its peak in India and the most wonderful news has been announced!

The Valley of Flowers has opened up for general public from June 1 and has created immense excitement among trekkers and nature lovers. The excitement is more so because it was not open for last few years due to the pandemic.

Established in 1982, the Valley of flowers National Park is one of the most globally-popular treks of the Himalayas. It is located in the higher Garhwal Himalayas in the state of Uttarkhand. The trek passes through dense forests, frigid glaciers and the gushing Pushpawati river.

This valley is known for its rare and exotic flowers and has been declared as a UNESCO World Site in 2005.

History of Valley of flowers

This valley has a unique history too. Nestled within the Himalayas, this area was hidden from common public for many years though Col. Edmund Smyth had discovered Pushpawati River as early as 1862.

It was accidentally discovered in 1931 by three British mountaineers Frank S. Smythe, RL Holdworth and Eric Shipton during their descent from Mt.Kamet. While descending they lost their way only to discover this heavenly valley. They named this flowery terrain, the Valley of Flowers!

One of the trekkers, Frank S Smythe an avid mountaineer, photographer, Botanist and an author, had already taken part in various expeditions to the Alps and Himalayas.

Common name: Brown’s Saxifrage , Botanical name: Saxifraga brunonis , Family: Saxifragaceae (saxifrage family)

He was so enchanted by the valley that he published a book bringing it global attention. The book details the story of his teams’ trekking adventure in upper Himalayas and how rain and sleet made them lose direction only to descend to this amazing place and discover the valley in the monsoon season.

It also records the names and features of the rare and special flowers condensed from the findings in that 1931 trip and two later trips undertaken by the author.

Joan Margaret Legge, was the next botanist to visit this valley. She was deputed by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 1939 to collect some samples of the plants growing there.

However she lost her life slipping from a cliff. Later her sister built a memorial at the same spot. Trekkers going on this trail do not miss visiting this memorial.

The valley was frequented by many other trekkers since Frank and Joan.

It was closed to trekkers for some time in the 1960s due to border disputes. It was opened again and declared as a national park in 1980.

Research in Valley of Flowers

An acclaimed Indian Botanist Prof. Chandra Prakash Kala was deputed by Wildlife Institute of India to carry out research here between 1993 and 2003.

Prof. Chandra Prakash studied and listed more than 520 alpine plants growing here . Few of his findings uncovered an amazing fact – in just a short span of 3.5 Monsoon months, numerous wild flowers grew one after another in an amazing ecological succession!

He has detailed this and many other facts in his two books and numerous other articles. The names of his two books are:

His books and regular articles on the valley became the foundation for the declaration of the Valley of Flowers as a World Heritage site.

Some Mythology

Not only history, this place holds some curious mythical stories too. Locals believed that it the land was inhabited by fairies and Goddesses and hence left it untouched even before it was declared a world heritage site.

Folklore says that that Gods and the Mahabharata heroes, the Pandavas frequented this region.

Lord Brahma is said to have born from the local flower Brahma Kamal, which rose from the belly of Lord Vishnu. Brahma Kamal is a rare flower that blooms every 12 years. Also the flower takes more than 4 hours to open fully. This flower is auspicious to Lord Shiva and it is offered across all Shiva temples in this region.

Itinerary for Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib

Valley of flowers is located over an area of 87 kms in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and forms one of the core zones of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve.

It was a serendipitous moment when it was discovered by three English mountaineers. They lost their way while descending the Mt.Kamet.

The trek to Valley of flowers passes through lovely pine forests, expansive meadows and glittering lakes. The trek extends further to Hemkund Sahib on Day 4 for the devout visitors.

More than 600 varieties of Orchids, daises, anemones, Poppies, Primulas, marigolds etc grow here in the Valley of Flowers. Some of them are rare, endemic and exotic.

Itinerary - Valley of Flowers trek plan

The Valley of Flowers trek involves 5 days of Action and Adventure!

Here we go…

Day 1

Haridwar/Rishikesh to Govindghat/Joshimath

Pick up will be from Haridwar/Rishikesh at six in the morning.
The journey further will be by road through Prayag, the city in the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi river.
After a 300 kms ride we drop you at Joshimath/Govindghat for dinner and night stay at a designated hotel. Enjoy your night stay here and wake up to the gorgeous views of Garhwal Himalayas in the morning.

Day2

Govindghat/Joshimath to Ghangaria Via Poolna

The actual trekking sessions begin on the second day.
After a 4 kms drive from Govindghat to Poolna you will be ascending 9 kms to Ghangaria by afternoon.
You will be served lunch enroute and reach hotel just in time for evening tea and snacks. Dinner will also be arranged at the same hotel.

Day 3

Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers

A four km trek from Ghangaria on the 3^rd morning will take you to the Valley of Flowers.
The journey begins after breakfast and ends at a place that transcends the definition of natural beauty! Time passes quicker at the Valley of Flowers than anywhere else! And so by the time you have explored half the valley it is time to leave. We however try to finish a quick packed lunch session before leaving though..
The trek back to Ghagharia is followed by dinner and some rest after an exhilarating trek day!

Day 4

Ghangaria to HemKund Sahib 6 km Trek

The trek continues next day for others who wish to visit the Hemkund Sahib.
The 6 kms trek begins at Ghangaria.
The steep ascent passes through beautiful waterfalls, flowering plants, glaciers and glimpses of snow capped mountains.
We arrive at the Hemkund in the afternoon.
Most visitors would not miss taking a dip in the ice cold lake before going into the HemKund Sahib. You can also visit the Lokpal temple located close by.
The return journey will begin by 2pm as the weather conditions are unpredictable here.
You will reach Ghangaria just in time for evening snacks and early hotel dinner.

Day 5

Ghangaria to Joshimath via govindghat 9 km trek and 28 km drive

On the 5^th day you will descend off 9 kms to reach Govindghat.
A 28 kms drive to Joshimath will ensue soon. Lunch and dinner will be provided at Joshimath.

Day 6

Ghangaria to Joshimath via Govindghat 9 km trek and 28 km drive.
After Breakfast, we will drive you back to Rishikesh/Haridwar by 6 pm.
